Stone, Light and Water
Three elements add up to a “nature“ spectacle
The manufacturer of the ‚Casalgrande Padana‘ porcelain stoneware based in Emilia took the company’s 50-year anniversary as the occasion to initiate an impressive land art project. Kengo Kuma, who created a kind of wall made out of 1,052 white marble panels in nine different sizes, was persuaded to take part. With its water surfaces and the precisely laid out “gravel bed“, the whole thing is reminiscent of a Zen garden based on the typical Japanese interpretation. Closed and open areas alternate in a curved rhythm and invite the viewer to view the landscape as if through a grid. The “images“ vary depending on the time of day, the season and the weather. The enactment with artificial light is also all about change. The high-gloss, white marble becomes a projection surface for cold or warm light. The spectrum ranges from 3000 through 4000 to 5000K.
