Wo liegt die Grenze zwischen freiem Entwurf und industriellem Herstellungsprozess? Auf der Suche nach Talenten hat sich Alberto Alessi nach China aufgemacht und dort sieben Architekten um den Entwurf von archetypischen Tabletts gebeten.

‚(Un)Forbidden City‘ ist Alessis jüngstes Metaprojekt. Es will das Potenzial chinesischen Produktdesigns ausloten. Das Designkonzept verantwortet Gary Chang aus Hong Kong, einer von 22 Architekten, die bereits 2003 am Projekt ‚Tea & Coffee Towers‘ mitwirkten. Chang und weitere sieben renommierte chinesische Architekten wurden von Designimpresario Alberto Alessi um den Entwurf eines archetypischen Tabletts gebeten. Die Resultate sind bereits Teil der aktuellen Frühling/Sommer-Kollektion, gefertigt aus Edelstahl bei Chang Yung Ho, Wang Shu, Zhang Ke und Zhang Lei, ausschließlich aus Melamin bei Urbanus, und in Materialkombination bei Ma Yan Song (Edelstahl und Mahagoni), Liu Jia Kun (Aluminium und Edelstahl) und Gary Chang (Edelstahl und Melamin). Alberto Alessi liest die Metaprojekte als Spiegel unserer Konsumgesellschaft, wobei er neben dem kulturellen auch offen das wirtschaftliche Interesse kommuniziert: In den Tabletts und ihren Entwerfern steckt das Potenzial für künftige Produkte, ein Erstkontakt ist hergestellt. Schon die Megaprojekte ‚Tea & Coffee Piazza‘ (1983) und ‚Tea & Coffee Towers‘ (2003) führten Architektur und Industriedesign zusammen. Sie gewannen ausländische Designer für italienisches Design und machten umgekehrt italienische Architekten im Ausland bekannt. Und manches Stück weist über seine Zeit hinaus: der Espressokocher ‚La Conica‘ von Aldo Rossi, der Wasserkessel mit der Vogelflöte ‚9093‘ von Michael Graves, die Tisch-Kollektionen von David Chipperfield, Future Systems oder Doriana und Massimiliano Fuksas, die Tee- und Kaffee-Sets von Jean Nouvel oder SANAA oder die Objekte von Zaha Hadid. Die ‚(Un)Forbidden City‘ hat legendäre Vorbilder. Jetzt ist es China.

Where is the borderline between a free design and the industrial production process? Looking for talents, Alberto Alessi took off to China. Where he asked seven architects to design archetypal trays.
‚(Un)Forbidden City‘ is the name of Alessi’s most recent metaproject. He intends to fathom the potential of Chinese product design. Gary Chang from Hong Kong, one of 22 architects who already participated in the ‘Tea & Coffee Towers’ project of 2003, is responsible for the design concept. Design impresario Alberto Alessi had asked Chang and seven other renowned Chinese architects to design an archetypal tray. The results are already part of the spring/summer collection. In the case of Chang Yung Ho, Wang Shu, Zhang Ke and Zhang Lei they are made of stainless steel, while Urbanus uses only melamine. A combination of materials is used by Ma Yan Song (stainless steel and mahogany), Liu Jia Kun (aluminium and stainless steel) and Gary Chang (stainless steel and melamine). In Alberbo Alessi’s eyes, the metaprojects are mirrors of our consumer society, in which context he not only communicates a cultural but quite openly also an economic interest. In the trays and in their designers lies the potential for future products; a first contact has been made. Already the ‚Tea & Coffee Piazza‘ (1983) and ‚Tea & Coffee Towers‘ (2003) megaprojects brought architecture and industrial design together. Foreign designers were won over for Italian design and, vice versa, made Italian architects known abroad. Many a piece transcends the boundaries of its time: the ‘La Conica‘ espresso coffee maker by Aldo Rossi, the ‘Whistling Bird Teakettle 9093’ by Michael Graves, the tableware collections by David Chipperfield, Future Systems or Doriana and Massimiliano Fuksas, the tea and coffee sets by Jean Nouvel or SANAA and the objects by Zaha Hadid. ‚(Un)Forbidden City‘ has legendary models. Now it is China.
