die amerikanische Gründerin Wallis Annenberg bereichert Los Angeles um eine weitere Attraktion: Petspace. Hier trifft Mensch auf Haustier. Ginge es nach Wallis, dann sollte die Adoption von Haustieren und deren Erziehung nicht behördlichen Tierheimen überlassen bleiben. Vielmehr würden die Adoptionen in einem eigens dafür geschaffenen Zentrum angebahnt, in dem die Besucher sich interaktiv und persönlich mit Tieren beschäftigen können und sie von Trainingsschulen ebenso profitieren wie von den Forschungserkenntnissen des ‚Petspace Leadership Institute‘.
Petspace – Mensch trifft Haustier
In George Miers von Swatt Miers Architects in Nordkalifornien fand die umtriebige Philanthropin einen in der Tierhaltung erfahrenen Architekten, dessen Konzepte ihr jedoch nicht weit genug gingen: „Ach George, wir müssen das viel besser machen!“ So begann eine jahrelange Zusammenarbeit, in der Räume für Haustiere kreiert wurden, wie sie die Welt noch nicht gesehen hat.
Petspace ist auch Therapie- und Genesungsstation
Im Silicon-Beach-Quartier in LA fanden sie ein geeignetes Gebäude, das sie für den Petspace innen von Grund auf neu gestalteten. So verfügt das technisch hochmoderne Zentrum neben den öffentlichen Bereichen auch über eine Tierklinik mit Röntgen, Chirurgie sowie Unterwasser-Laufband für die Hydrotherapie und über eine angeschlossene Therapie- und Genesungsstation für traumatisierte Tiere. Auch kooperiert Petspace mit anderen Organisationen wie dem California Science Center und der LA County Animal Care and Control.

Den Besucher begrüßen Hund und Katze als riesiges Animatronic-Modell in der Welcome Lobby, wo auch ein interaktiver Touchscreen über Veranstaltungen, adoptionsfähige Haustiere, Forschungsergebnisse und nutzergenerierte Inhalte informiert. Von dort geht es zu den einzelnen, dem spielerischen Lernen vorbehaltenen Bereichen mit Namen wie Pounce Patio, Fetch Deck,

Happiness Is A Warm Puppy
Hello friends of pets,
Marilyn Monroe once said: “dogs never bite me, just humans.” Wallis Annenberg, an American philanthropist and heiress of a multibillion-dollar fortune, had the brilliant idea to create Los Angeles’ latest attraction: PetSpace, where people and pets connect. Not that Wallis is inexperienced to the creation of remarkable centers. LA has already the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts and the Annenberg Space for Photography, a state-of-the-art museum and gallery. But there was nothing for man’s best friend. So Wallis, who has two dogs on her own and is a pet lover, started to dream up a totally new concept: “To me, that kind of decision is always driven by a larger vision. We knew we wanted the PetSpace to be open and modern, to be fun and inclusive, to be a place where the newest technology could serve the oldest and simplest values, for pets and pet lovers alike.“
Instead of leaving pet adoption and education up to governmental animal shelters, showcase a high tech and very well designed community center where the visitor can experience interactive adoption suites, animal education centers, and discover the most recent developments from the PetSpace Leadership Institute.
Next, Wallis went on a search for the most capable and experienced architect of animal facilities. She met with George Miers of Swatt Miers Architects in Northern California. With tremendous pride, George showed off to her his designer accomplishments. At the end of the tour, George turned to Wallis and said: “What do you think?” Wallis paused, looked at him and responded: “Oh George, we must do much better!” This was the beginning of years and years of close collaboration to design an interior space for pets the world had never seen.
Located in LA’s Silicon Beach section, they took an existing building and totally redesigned the interior: Wallis: “So while it can be very exciting to design a new building from the ground up, and while it‘s something we were prepared to do in our research and development phase, we were lucky to find an existing space that met all of our needs and then some. It‘s right in the heart of LA‘s fast-growing tech community. It‘s right at the cross-section of some of our most diverse
and underserved communities. It‘s accessible to Angelenos of every background — anyone who cares about animals, and wants to strengthen the deep bonds we share with them. And we knew it was a renovation away from exceeding our wildest dreams for the PetSpace, which it has.”
Beyond the public spaces, PetSpace is a working hospital, therapy and recovery center to serve traumatized animals, with x-ray and surgery rooms as well as grooming and a hydrotherapy treadmill. In addition, the center collaborates with organizations such as the California Science Center and LA County Animal Care and Control.
Designed to strengthen the human-animal bond. You enter the Welcome Lobby and are greeted by a giant animatronic dog and cat. Connected with the PetVision wall, a huge interactive touch screen to learn about upcoming programs, adoptable pets, research articles and user-generated content. Then the visitor goes on to the Pounce Patio, Fetch Deck, Pet Porch, and/or Wag Center. Educational fun at its best.
