Experimentierfreude mit Materialien
Hind Rabii

„Go for it!“, dachte sie.

Hind Rabii

For 20 years now, Hind Rabii has been designing decorative lamps for the brand of the same name. She was born in Morocco and has ambitious goals, wanting to be on an equal footing with renowned manufacturers in future.

Author: Katharina Feuer

When you graduate from school at the age of 17 and graduate at 22, you don‘t have a proper plan for your life. This was at least what Hind Rabii felt. The engineer, born in Morocco, actually didn‘t see any future for herself in her home country. Her family works in the textile industry and faced increasing problems from Chinese competitors. So the designer spontaneously decided to go back to Verviers in Belgium, where she had also had met her husband during her time at university.

Next came the foundation of her company in 1997, in actual fact in the garage of her apartment. When she was about to furnish her home, she had been on the lookout for beautiful lamps and didn‘t find what she wanted.

Hind Rabii knew that she could do better, although she had to develop everything by herself. Her technical expertise turned out to be a big help. “Go for it”, she thought.

“My lamps are different. They are not white, cold and functional as most of them are. They radiate quality and noblesse. They consist of various materials and are manufactured to a very high standard. I would hang up these lamps also in my own home”, she says enthusiastically.

Her designs indeed impress by poetic, surprising and narrative features. “I travel a lot and meet interesting people. All this influences my work. It would be too simplistic to attribute my style to my Moroccan roots alone”, Rabii explains.

In the beginning the lamp designer presented her works only at a fair in Belgium which now no longer exists. Then years at the Maison & Objet in Paris followed. This year she showed her designs at imm cologne and at Light + Building for the first time. “Frankfurt was a very special event. Here‘s where the experts meet. The feedback was fantastic”.

She is happy that renowned manufacturers like Foscarini and Luceplan had stopped at her stand and taken a closer look. She knows that “you don‘t do that when the stand is trivial and the products commonplace”. Her goals are ambitious. “I don‘t want to produce just lamps. My name is to be mentioned next to the big names very soon – at eye level.”

She is also supported by her husband Michel Orban who joined the company in 2005. He deals with the technical details and remains in the background. The mother of two says laughingly: “Such an interview wouldn‘t be his cup of tea at all.”

Hind herself stands in the limelight and tackles not only design and marketing but communication as well. “It is not enough to make a well-designed lamp like I imagine it. There have to be expressive photographs, the lamps must be put on a stage. Only in this way will the customer get an idea of how they can be used and applied.”

They‘d need one year on an average for the development of a new lamp. She has also been working with external designers for two years now. She had been looking for newinspirations. Collaboration is intense, because Rabii only reluctantly relinquished control because at the end of the day, it is her name that stands for the product. This was how ‚T-Cotta‘ came into being, too, in co-operation with the Italian chiaramonte Marin Studio.

As far as materials are concerned, Hind Rabii wanted to try out new things right from the beginning. She started with wood and glass and soon experimented with non-ferrous metals and ceramics. But textiles and leather found their way into her Collections as well. The most recent addition is fiberglass.

“The material results from the draft design, when we face a problem and then try out a different approach. In most cases my husband says “it doesn‘t work”, but I cannot accept this most of the time. Then we try it out, and he will have enough time to devise how it will work after all.” It is clear that Hind Rabii is not satisfied with half-baked solutions.

Rabii‘s company produces in Belgium and Italy. She knows that this is expensive compared with other production sites, but for her „Made in China” is out of the question. “That is no option.”

There is always much to be done. And there is always much more. “Then my children will phone me and bring me down again. Mum, come home, it‘s eight o‘clock and we are hungry”, she says and smiles. “It is something special to design lamps. And it is a task never completed.”

Designer Hind Rabii was born in Morocco in 1973. After graduating from school at the age of 17, she went to Belgium to study industrial engineering. Following graduation in Verviers, she returned to her home country, before deciding to establish Hind Rabii sprl, a company of her own. In her lamp designs she combines Scandinavian style with Mediterranean colors.
