„And now as I wander, my thoughts ever stray, South of the Border, down Mexico way.“ Der Song wurde 1939 für den Kinofilm „South of the Border“ geschrieben.

Letter from Los Angeles
South of the Border
Hola Amigos,
“And now as I wander, my thoughts ever stray, South of the Border, down Mexico way.” Written in 1939 for the movie of the same name. Today this song is as valid as ever, especially right now in a climate of political ideas straying too much from a reasonable centerline as it relates to our Mexican neighbors and friends. As a matter of fact, Mexican culture and influence has been integral part of the United States forever. Therefore we welcome the Caravana Americana, originally created as a window of opportunity to export Hispanic designer products to the USA, Latin America and eventually the world.
Mexico seems to see itself as an emerging design power, but the real reason seems to be its proximity to and vast interrelations with the United States. You can find talented designers in Colombia as well as in Argentina. The Caravana Americana recognized this reality, and adjusted accordingly to represent the best product designs and designers from Latin America. Even this is a bar set very high due to the enormous distances and shipping costs of items to be sent to Mexico City, location of this designer showcase. Try to ship a loveseat from Santiago de Chile to the Caravana Americana destination, it’s a straight line of 4,110 miles (6,615 km).
The Caravana Americana is a newly created annual designer trade show, on the charming grounds of an old tram terminal with two gigantic but retired turbines from “once upon a time” in Mexico City. With a lot of passion, the young and/or dynamic designers, artisans and manufacturers present a wide range of Latin flavors: from furniture and home goods to fashion and the fashionable. Interestingly enough, their crafted designs intuitively incorporate quite often their Latin culture and traditions. Resulting in unique renditions from outdoor furniture to dinnerware. Manufactured at a small scale, sometimes even with ambition to empower women in poverty-stricken communities. There is certainly a new momentum for well-designed products coming out of Latin America.
This event is the brainchild of Gina Barrios and Alessandro Cerutti, and is well on the way to turn into Latin America’s premier trading post for superbly designed products from this continent. The key to their success will be the curated dedication to product selection and the highest standard of product quality. Buyers from around the world are hereby advised to visit the next Caravanaamericana.com. It should give any established marketplace a uniquely innovative Latin impulse.
