Fuorisalone – Milan Design Week

Innovation and sustainability Co-operation with Green Product Award

On green paths through Milan

You will come again and again if you have once been to the Italian design metropolis. But where will sustainable materials, products and technologies have their place? A preview of Salone del Mobile, the special shows and Design Week.

Author: Nils Bader

This year the Milanese organizers offer visitors a ‘Manifesto’ – a new event in the 57-year old history of the Milan Furniture Fair. One communication reads as follows: ‘the invitation to innovate is, in fact, a plea not to rest on our laurels, but to look beyond what has already been achieved and aim for sustainable quality, collaboration, inclusion and sharing, valorizing young talent and the cultural heritage.’

The pertinent installation under the heading of ‘Living Nature. La Natura dell’Abitare’, created by Carlo Ratti Associati (CRA), is at Piazza del Duomo. The four seasons of the year have been staged here on an area of 500 m² with the help of an intelligent, low-energy solution. Probably not the worst starting point.

Salone del Mobile

But regrettably this fair, too, misses the opportunity to offer visitors an option of how to search selectively for green exhibitors and products. So here’s just one special pick: first specimens and prototypes were presented at the ‘3days of Design Copenhagen’; and in Stockholm we even saw the first products. With ‘Really’ Kvadrat demonstrates how textile recycling can be used for the creation of new products on a large scale, a very promising approach. Apart from that the motto is keep your eyes open and put on comfortable shoes.

Salone Satellite

Salone Satellite is a special show created by Marva Griffin Wilshire. This year is the 21st time that the work of 650 young designers will be shown here. Exactly ten years ago the topic was ‘go green’. This year the guiding theme of the event is ‘Rising Design from Africa and Latin America’. The focus is on possible solutions for social problems and environmental states of emergency, plus future ways of conscious dwelling. Curators of Salone Satellite are the Brazilian brothers Fernando and Humberto Campana and the French-Moroccan designer and interior designer Hicham Lahlou.

Superdesign Group Show presents research results and innovations of contemporary materials and new technologies. At Superstudio Più you can look at two exhibitions: ‘Materials Village’ and ‘Smart City’. In the ‘Materials Village’, manufacturers showcase their partly sustainable materials, staged in co-operation with international designers. In the adjacent ‘Art Garden’ a range of installations on the subject of sustainability and materials has been put up, among them one installation by the Marco Piva studio.

‘Smart City – Material, Technologies & People’ is presented by the Material ConneXion Italia company. The exhibition deals with problems concerning new building, sustainable cities, smart living or integrated mobility.

Fuorisalone – Milan Design Week

A project by Interni called House in Motion consists of a series of experimental and interactive architectural and design-oriented installations on the subjects of innovation, mankind and technology. The works result from the co-operation of renowned international designers, companies, institutions and start-ups.

For quite some time, the Ventura company has curated design shows in Lambrate, Berlin, New York and recently in Dubai. This year the company starts with a project called ‘Ventura Future’, conveniently located in the neighborhood of the hip Bar Basso. On about 8,000 m², Ventura presents only new products. As the shows in Milan are famous for their locations, you may look forward to the exhibitions at FuturDome and The Loft.

Containerwerk provides the official German contribution with a showcase made of used overseas shipping containers transformed into accommodation for living and working.

Last but not least Rossana Orlandi – a building like a kaleidoscope, converted by her year after year into a new hotspot. True, you will have to spend a bit of time to find the green products, but it is always worth a visit.

All in all, there is no Green Guide and there is no spectacular green event at the fair, which is a poor performance in view of the ‘Manifesto’ and the fair’s international significance. That, anyway, was the state of affairs at the copy deadline. Online updates will follow.

I am looking forward to your best and your worst discoveries.
